beach boy

"mom, mom, mom.....beach?"    "yes quinn, we're going to the beach in a few days... we're going bud, we're going"   a few minutes later quinn comes out with his swim suit on just as the school bus pulls up in front of the house... so i scramble to get his regular shorts on. he's confused and a little disappointed, but i reassure him that yes quinn, we're going to the beach, but right now it's time for school.  "don't worry kiddo, we're going to the beach, we are."

quinn is never quite as happy as he is when he's at the beach. he loves to throw rocks into the water and spash and play. usually it doesn't matter how cold it is.  his lips could be blue as a smurfs, but happily stay in the cold water. but where we're going is rocky point mexico, about 4 hours south of our home here in mesa az, and right now the water is perfect.  even i could stay in it all day long.  this is my favorite time of year to go, and i'm so happy that we're going with the kids, i could burst. i think for quinn, it's the best therapy money can buy.  he longs for the beach. he sits at the computer looking through pictures of himself there...

i do hope that my little autistic kiddo developes a better concept of time.  "tomorrow" and "next week" are just not understood, i'm afraid.  so i am thankful that he is patient.  he does understand that i won't lie to him, and that indeed we are going.  when he asks me, "mom, mom, mom....beach?" and i say, "yes quinn, we're going to the beach in a few days."  he hugs me and says, "thank you, thank you." then opens his arms up and says, "hug?" and i say, "sure bud, i'll give you a hug."
